Taking It To The Streets

When I first bought the records several years back, My eyes for some reason were drawn to one of the simplest covers. It was the Doobie Brothers album "Taking it to The Streets". With the overwhelming amount of music I got in that one day I knew I needed to start somewhere, this is the album I first put on the needle. Here I have included the title track to the album because it is such a great tune. Whenever that intro piano and bass line kick in at the beginning I want to get up and dance like one of those orange monsters from "The Labyrinth". So put on your tightest pair of jeans, a comfy 80's sweatshirt and bounce to this incredible D-Bro song!

Tug Of War

Here is another part of my record collection in the pop genre. The artist is Paul McCartney and the album is "Tug Of War". Although some of you may be thinking the song would be the classic duet "Ebony and Ivory" with Stevie Wonder, its not. I went a little more simple and pulled out the title track "Tug Of War". From the first note of vibrato in the song to the last syncopation with the next son "Take it Away", this is a near perfect song. A great use of choir, Lead vocals are perfectly in front of the mix, triumphant yet poppy build-ups, and lyrics simple yet profound. Next time you are in the office hum this all day long and you will still not be sick of it.

My Debut Album Just Ranked #25

When I got home today from my crazy day... which consisted of 13 hours of straight being away from the house and putting on several caps to earn my days wages... I got home to find out that my album, "Could This Be..." ranked number twenty-five on the iTunes singer/songwriters charts. I was completely dumbfounded. I really have to tell you, I do not deserve this. But because of friends and fans, this Podunk kids dreams got to soar tonight. I am truly grateful to all of you for helping me promote and spreading the word. Here is a special treat... the rough cut version of the grittiest song Ive got on iTunes from "Could This Be..." (I sound Like Mr. Ed Nichols)

Another Harry Belafonte

While I was writing that last post I was listening to Belafonte at Carnegie Hall and had to put this song up too. It is really fun, and should be enjoyed with a smile. Good old calypso mama will make everything better.

Record Collection

About seven years ago, I found myself crossing the Lomita-Narbonne crossroad in Lomita, CA only to pass the worst/greatest thing I had ever seen...A record store...going out of business. Obviously this was terrible. Being such a supporter of the music tradition (especially vinyl), my heart went out to the owner who loved, sold, and invested his dreams in these records. But someone was going to benefit greatly from this owners misfortune and I wasn't about to let that be a huge record shop like Fingerprints or Amoeba, it was going to be me. As self centered as this sounds its true, I loved music and at that time only owned 10 vinyl records. As I approached the shops front door, I stopped on the broken curb for a second and glared into the cheap window painted pain reading "A Better Groove Record Store, Going Out Of Business, Make an Offer". I walked in not looking at a single record but noticing the quantity with my peripheral. I went straight to the back and asked to see the owner. From behind the tape covered, sticky oak desk a woman glared back at me and said "owners not in, but I'm as good as the owner". Confused I responded "Ummm...okay...when will he be in". She replied back quickly "anything you want to ask him you can ask me, I sleep with him". My first response was "nasty" but luckily that was not verbalized, just easy to read from my facial expression, like I had just caught someone picking there boog's and eating it. "How much are you selling the records for?" I asked. Taking a while to ponder the question she replied "Grab a pile, and make an offer". I literally felt like a fat kid that had been offered the chance to eat his whole birthday cake. Well, long story short, I grabbed 800 records and asked how much... she said "$120 and you got yourself a deal" Shocked, but trying not to reveal my joy, I said "are you serious" to which she replied "my husband has to let this place go tomorrow, and you look like a kid that could use these..." she paused for a moment and with tear filled eyes finished "keep the tradition going". I didn't know what that meant then but thought about those words for so long until I deducted, love music! Old and new, slow and fast, ambient and dry, empty and full, cd and tape, Mayer and Coltrane. She wanted me not just to keep the vinyl spinning, but to keep the love of music alive in myself.
In memory of A Better Groove Record Store, every week I will take a record out of the collection and highlight one song with cover art and a short explanation as to what the song means to me. This week is Harry Belafonte (Day-O) and his incredibly leisure song "Rum & Coca-Cola". I am putting this up because it was Sunday today, and everyone of age should take heed to its lyrics (not really everyone). This song goes out to Jared Sayers as he finishes working on his outdoor deck in the beach sun, take a break and crank this one up.

First Album Purchase

Tonight I received the heart warming news that the first album purchase had been made on my CD baby account for "Could This Be...". It may sound vein to describe this as heart warming but there is no other way to describe the emotional lift you get when someone supports you. One year ago I told my wife that it had been a goal of mine for as long as I could remember to write an album. At the time, I did not have one of the songs currently on the album even in my mind. I knew I was starting from scratch but was determined to make an art piece that bled my thoughts, desires, gripes, and love for life. Over the summer of 2009 I took several weeks off of work to sit down, brainstorm, drink coffee, pull my hair, hate the guitar, love the guitar, love movies, eat, not sleep, stress, and write. At the end of the few weeks, I had nine songs (nine keepers at least). "Should I make an EP", I thought, "and cut out two of the songs and end up with a solid seven?". I pondered this for several weeks until the song "Life Used To Be So Simple" was written. After I had reached the tenth song, I pushed myself to drum up one last keeper. Well...that one turned into four. I was extremely lucky to have this roll. On this post I have included one of the rough recordings I did when I was piecing together my songs. The name of the nine song "rough" album is "Robs Red Studio" because the place I recorded belonged to a friend of mine with a funny story behind the red walls that currently occupied his creative work zone. This is "Saddy" off of Rob's Red Studio. Hey Rob Kral...Thank You So Much, you helped me start this!

Covers

Weekly I will try to post a cover song that is on my musical plate.
Let me know if you have suggestions... no promises.

Lonely But Hopeful

I think I will start this blog by saying life can feel lonely. Im sorry for anyone out there that has had to feel this feeling before. Although it is normal it is complicating. It makes everything feel and look different. Although this is my musician blog, I will be very honest about what the music world feels like, especially as I am starting out. I was telling my wife tonight as i griped over lack of support, that even the best of musicians had to start somewhere and felt the same loneliness and lack of support. So I guess the point is... stick in there. As my father always says "This too shall pass". Get past the hard times and enjoy the good. And always remember, the reason you are doing this is because you love it.
